State leaders have an interest in asking the citizens to sacrifice themselves “for the common good”.

One more tax, to fix the public schools and hospitals.

One more restriction of freedom of speech, for an appeased public life.

One more obstruction to the freedom of association, for equality.

If the citizenry is foolish enough to embrace the bargain, they will inevitably suffer while politicians and bureaucrats benefit.
